Color Box- Baby/Child Sweater

This sweater could be for a boy or girl depending on what colors you are using.

Recommended needle size
1 US #8/5 mm circular needle 24 inches or longer.
Waste yarn or stitch holders.

GAUGE
17 sts/24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette st

PATTERN NOTES

Three-Needle Bind Off

Hold both pieces of knitting with right sides together.*Insert needle into first st on front needle and first st on back needle, and knit them together. Repeat this for the next st on the front and back needles. Draw the first st worked over the second st.*Repeat from * to * until all sts have been bound off. Break yarn and draw through remaining st.

DIRECTION
BACK

For mitered square edging CO 25[29, 31, 33] stitches in green.

Row 1: (RS) Sl1, k24[28, 30, 32].
Row 2: (WS) Sl1, k10
[12, 13, 14], k3tog, k11[13, 14, 15].
Row 3: Sl1, knit to end.
Row 4: Sl1, k9
[11, 12, 13], k3tog, k10[12, 13, 14].
Row 5: Sl1, knit to end.
Row 6: Sl1, k8
[10, 11, 12], k3tog, k9[11, 12, 13].
Row 7: Sl1, knit to end.
Continue to work, in this manner having 1 less st on each side of decrease until 3 sts remain. K3tog. Turn to right side. Don't bind remaining st off.

Add second square in color red:

Row 1: working in each slip stitch on top edge of square pick up an knit 12[14, 15, 16] sts ; cast on 12[14, 15, 16] sts.
Together with the remaining stitch from the previous square you will have 25
[29, 31, 33] sts.
Continue to work a mitered square in the same way as you did for the first one. Then add a blue and an orange square in the same manner. BO.

With MC and RS facing pick up and knit 50[56, 60, 64] sts along top edge of mitered square stripe.

Knit in stockinette st until whole piece measures 13[14, 15.5, 16.5] inches. Knit 16[17, 18, 19] sts and put them on a holder or waste yarn. BO 18[22, 24, 26 ] sts. Knit 16[17, 18, 19] sts and put on a holder or waste yarn.

FRONT

Work as for back until piece measures

10[10.5, 12, 12.5] inches. Then for placket opening knit (RS facing) 19[21, 23, 24] sts and put them on a holder or waste yarn, bind off 6[7, 7, 8] sts, knit 6[7, 7, 8] sts and put them on a holder or waste yarn, knit 19[21, 23, 24] sts.

Turn work and continue to work the stitches on your needle until placket opening measures 3[3.5, 3.5, 4] inches.

At beginning of next row (RS) BO 3[4, 5, 5] stitches. Put remaining 16[17, 18, 19] sts on holder or waste yarn. Break yarn.

Rejoin yarn at other side of placket opening of held stitches and work as for first half reversing neck shaping.

SLEEVES

Mitered square edging:

CO 13[15, 15, 17] sts in green.
Row 1: Sl1, k to end.
Row 2: Sl1, k4
[5, 5, 6 ], k3tog, k5[6, 6, 7].
Row 3: Sl1, k to end.
Row 4: Sl1, k3
[4, 4, 5], k3tog, k4[5, 5, 6]

Continue to work, in this manner having 1 less st on each side of decrease until 3 sts remain. K3tog. Turn to right side. Don't bind remaining st off. Add second square in color red:

Row 1: working in each slip stitch on top edge of square pick up an knit 6[7, 7, 8] sts ; cast on 6[7, 7, 8 ] sts. Together with the remaining stitch from the previous square you will have 13[15, 15, 17] sts. Continue to work a mitered square in the same way as you did for the first one. Then add a blue and the orange square in the same manner. BO.

With MC and RS facing pick up and knit 24[28, 28, 32] sts along top edge of mitered square stripe.

In next row (WS) increase 4[4, 4, 2] sts purlwise evenly distributed. Continue to work in stockinette stitch and at the same time inc 1 st each side every 4th row 8[9, 10, 12] times and every 6th row 1[2, 1, 0] times. Continue in pattern st until piece measures 8.5[9.5, 10.5, 11.5] inches.
BO.

Close shoulders seams with a three needle bind off.

HOOD

In MC and RS facing pick up and knit 5[6, 6, 6] beg on right front neck , pick up and knit 9 [11, 12, 13 ] sts, place marker, pick up and knit 9[11, 12, 13] sts, pick up and knit 5[6, 6, 6] sts at left front edge .

Turn work and continue to work in stockinette st and inc 18[12, 16, 18] sts evenly distributed at the same time in next RS row.

Make sure that you will have the same amount of sts on each side of the marker.

Work even for 1.3[1.3, 1.3, 1.5] inches. Inc 1 on every side of marker every 3 rws 10x[every 2 rws 3x; every 3 rws 8x; every 3rws 8x] then every 4 rws 3x[3 rws 14x; 4 rws 6x; 4rws 6x]

BO when piece measures 8.3[9.3, 9.3, 9.5] inches. Seam top.

PLACKET AND HOOD EDGING

RS facing knit 6[7, 7, 8] held sts in placket opening in green and pick up and knit 7[8, 8, 8] along side of placket opening. Continue to work a mitered square as described for the sleeve edging, beg with row 2 (WS).

Add more squares around left placket and neck opening, hood and right neck and placket opening in the same color sequence picking up sts on top edge of last square and corresponding side of placket opening, neck opening or hood. Sew top edge of last square to left bottom of placket opening.

FINISHING
Sew sleeve seams. Sew side seams. Sew in sleeves and weave in ends.
